How to Edit Sony’s XDCAM MXF Files in Avie Media Composer

Sony XDCAM series camcorders like Sony PMW-EX1, PDZ-VX10, Sony PMW-350K, Sony PMW-320K, Sony PMW-EX3, Sony PMW-EX1, Sony PMW-F3L, Sony PMW-F3K, Sony PMW-100, Sony PDW 700, Sony PDW-F800, etc are high-end professional camcorders which can capture stunning-quality HD images; they can offer very high quality HD recording at a data rate of up to 50Mbps at MXF format.

Whereas, it’s a bit hard when importing and editing XDCAM HD422 video footage with NLE like Avid Media Composer.

I have some mxf video to edit for group work, so I search on the web and wanna anyone to give me some help with Sony XDCAM MXF importing workflow in Avid MC. Finnally, I find that no matter what version of Avid that I have, what's ture that AMC doesn’t work with mxf files from my Sony XDCAM camcorder directly. And the most suggested workaround is to transcode Sony XDCAM MXF to DNxHD that Avid MC prefers.

Step 1. Load Sony XDCAM HD422 MXF footage

Run the top-rated Mac MXF to Avid DNxHD Converter. Click "Add" to load the source Sony MXF files. You can combine some MXF clips by checking the “Merge into one” box.



Step 2. Set Avid DNxHD as output format

Click on "Format", and select output format from the drop-down list. Follow "Avid Media Composer" > Avid DHxHD (*.mov)”.

Tip: Click "Settings" button if you’d like to customize advanced audio and video parameters like Video Codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, audio channels.



Step 4: Start rewrapping Sony MXF to Avid MC

When above steps finished, hit Convert button to start converting Sony XDCAM HD422 MXF to Avid DNxHD on Mac OS X for editing in Avid MC with a super fast speed.

After the conversion, you can simply click “Open” button to get the generated files and then transfer Sony XDCAM HD422 footage into Avid MC to do further editing with no issues.
